Highlights

• Updated web app styling and browser requirements — We've refreshed the app's styling while keeping its appearance largely unchanged. Breakout now requires Safari 16.4+, Chrome 111+, or Firefox 128+. If pages aren't displaying correctly, please update to a supported browser.

Improvements and fixes

Assignments and grading

• Complete experience previews: Instructors can now preview an entire experience, including the Results slide and Reconvene, when an End-of-Session Quiz is included.
• Consistent score display: Assignments open in multiple browser tabs now display the correct scores after a slide deck is changed. The underlying score data was not affected.
• More flexible assignment settings: Instructors can now switch a started Peer Review assignment to Solo. A confirmation warning explains that Peer Review will be disabled when the change is saved.
• Final grade visibility: Assignments without configured grading weights no longer display a final grade.
• Canvas grade synchronization: Grades synced to Canvas no longer count against an assignment's available submission attempts.
• Gradebook exports: Grade appeal override information is currently excluded from instructor gradebook and participant CSV exports.

• Access code and coupon redemption: Tokens and coupons are now limited to a single redemption each, improving consistency in how purchases and access are managed.
• Clearer assignment date guidance: Updated the missing-dates help page with wording that works across LMS platforms. Existing Canvas and D2L Brightspace guidance remains unchanged.
• Consistent results navigation: Completed assignments now display a "View Results" button instead of "View Summary," matching the terminology used in the assignments list.

Accessibility

Continued improvements to keyboard navigation, screen reader compatibility, and dialog interactions across the platform.

• Keyboard navigation: Improved keyboard support for multiselect checkboxes, exhibit viewing controls, and navigation drawers. The Notifications drawer can now be closed using the Escape key.
• Grade appeal accessibility: Keyboard users can now access the grade appeal button and read the explanation when an appeal is unavailable.
• Improved dialog behavior: Closing a dialog now dismisses only the active dialog, preventing multiple dialogs from closing with a single click.
• Simplified keyboard navigation: Reduced unnecessary Tab stops across headings, charts, polls, and rubric cards on the instructor Summary page.
• ZoomText compatibility: Fixed an issue where ZoomText AppReader could stop reading after users clicked inside a dialog.

Improvements and fixes

• Improved role handling so participants see only the options intended for them on their own results, based on their role in that specific class.
• The interactive elements list now keeps your scroll position after you close an edit or delete dialog, so you can continue where you left off.
• Participants now enter a session only after all of their pre-work quiz answers have been saved, so their quiz work is fully recorded.
• The LMS launch error page now offers clearer retry instructions, and the Contact Support email includes relevant user and session details so Breakout support can help you faster.
• The Manage Date Extensions option is no longer shown in LMS assignment settings for Canvas and Brightspace (D2L). Manage individual date extensions directly in your LMS.
• Breakout configuration windows, including Edit Grading and Edit Peer Reviews, are now responsive and scrollable in the Brightspace New Content Experience, so all settings are fully visible.

Accessibility

• Captions in participant meetings, including standard slides, dynamic intros, and processing videos, now use native video caption tracks for a more standard captioning experience.

Highlights

• Redesigned participant assignments page — The participant assignments page has a new design that groups assignments by course and section, showing the instructor, section dates, completion progress and a banner pointing you to your next step. Each assignment shows its due date, group, schedule, session date, grade (when visible), chat and the right action, and you can search assignments or filter to current ones.

Improvements and fixes

• When a group returns to an "Incomplete" session, the session now goes back to "Live" for the instructor and transcription starts as soon as the group leader joins.
• The next-step banner's button on the redesigned participant assignments page now displays correctly on narrow screens.
• Group chat messages now generate a single notification, and nudge emails are sent to participants only once.

Accessibility

• Addressed accessibility findings across key participant and instructor screens, including improved landmarks and headings, labelled inputs, and named dialogs and table columns for screen reader users. Three colours (success green, rust and dark gold) are slightly darker to meet contrast requirements.
• The redesigned participant assignments page now works better with screen readers, with each course table named after its course and section, search result counts read aloud, and chat buttons that say which assignment they belong to. At high zoom the page scrolls as one, so every assignment stays reachable.

Highlights

• Sessions open at their scheduled start time — Participants can now join a scheduled session only at its scheduled start time; until then, the "Join Session" button is disabled with a tooltip explaining when the session will be available. Pre-work, pre-quizzes and other materials stay available before the session, and demo rooms are not affected.
• Instructor emails now reach TAs and collaborators — Instructor emails now also go to the TAs and collaborators on the class, so your whole teaching team stays informed.

Improvements and fixes

• When you open a gradebook score in Insights, it can now explain that specific score, giving you more useful context on participant performance.
• Next Slide now works as expected in solo rooms after a participant leaves and rejoins, so they can keep moving through the session.
• Participants moved to another group now get access to their new group without extra steps, and instructors' group details load correctly after the move.

Accessibility

• The link back to your LMS is back in the left sidebar beside Log out, with sharper logos, higher contrast, a screen reader label, a visible keyboard focus ring, and a tooltip that stays open on hover and closes with Escape.

Highlights

• Automated emails from a dedicated sender address — Automated emails from Breakout Learning now come from noreply@breakoutlearning.com instead of the Support address, so you can recognize them easily.

Improvements and fixes

• Captions in certain case trailers no longer cover slide content when shown at a large caption size, so you can read the captions and the slides together.
• Instructors who are also collaborators now keep access to the Add New Class button when selecting 'Yourself' in the All Instructors dropdown.
• You will now see a single alert when Brightspace is experiencing issues, so you know when LMS-related features may be affected.

Accessibility

• Rubric scores, pass/fail icons, and results dialogs are now announced by screen readers, with no change to how they look on screen.

Highlights

• Automatic random grouping now includes every rostered participant — Automatic random grouping now places rostered participants who have not paid yet into groups, matching the "assign to random groups" button. These participants appear grayed out with a warning in the Groups view, and they still need to pay before they can open content and the live room.
• Email notice when your session is rescheduled — When a group's session time changes, every participant in the group now gets a "Your Breakout session has been rescheduled" email with the new date, time and time zone. The email goes out 15 minutes after the last change, so participants get one email for the final time rather than one per edit.
• Easier rescheduling from the assignment page — Participants can now reschedule by clicking their scheduled meeting time on the assignment page. The "Edit Group" option is now called "Edit Group Name & Time".
• Clearer grading example in Preview Experience — The Grading slide in Preview Experience is now clearly marked as an example, so instructors know the weights shown are not applied to their assignment.

Improvements and fixes

• Dynamic exhibits in live rooms now display participants' list-builder answers as intended.
• Participants who join a session from a second device now continue to be transcribed without needing to leave the meeting.
• Video slides in Safari now continue to play after a participant unplugs their headphones.
• Participants still taking a solo quiz no longer see the "Trouble hearing others" message while their groupmates talk in the waiting room.
• The device settings window now correctly identifies when only the camera is blocked, instead of reporting a microphone problem.
• Participants now hear their group again right away when a solo quiz or solo end-of-session phase ends.

Highlights

• New date and time picker — The date and time picker has been rebuilt with better keyboard navigation, screen reader support, focus behaviour, and overall usability.
• Troubleshooting from the A/V Check room — Participants can now open the Troubleshooting tool from the A/V Check room, so audio or video problems can be found and fixed before a session starts.
• New default contribution score mapping — The default contribution score mapping for new assignments has changed from 100/75/50/25/0 to 100/90/80/70/0, based on instructor feedback. Existing assignments are not affected, and instructors can still customize the mapping at any time.

Grading and assignments

• Improved grading reliability across assignment configurations and LMS-connected workflows.
• The instructor Summary tab chart now uses the average contribution scores of scored group members, and the section is renamed "Group Contribution Scores".
• Improved the reliability of automatic grading and instructor emails when assignments close.
• Group CSV imports now continue when some rows contain invalid email addresses; those rows go to the unmatched-participant list instead.

Sessions and audio

• Improved talk-track audio reliability so authored text is read consistently as written.
• Improved audio reliability in Safari when switching devices during a session, and hid audio output selection in Safari and on iOS, where the browser doesn't support it.
• Improved the reliability of joining a session, including when a meeting is opened in a second browser.

Slides, LMS and payments

• The exhibit mini carousel now starts minimized on video slides, and exhibits can't be linked to video slides; a clear message explains why at publish time.
• Copied slide decks now include all their files.
• Reminder emails for participants who reach Breakout through an LMS now use the time zone from the LMS, section, or institution instead of Pacific time.
• Closed LMS-synced sections now reopen when their LMS end date is extended.
• Estimated invoice costs now match between the Section page and the invoice request dialog.
• When Breakout is used inside another tool, checkout now opens in its own window so payment pages load reliably.

Highlights

• Canvas term dates now set section dates — When a Canvas course takes its dates from the school's academic term, Breakout now uses those term dates for the section. Sections whose dates need updating are corrected automatically the next time someone opens Breakout from that Canvas course, and a section that closed early reopens.
• In-session connection warning — Participants whose internet connection stays unstable during a session now see a connection warning. Only the affected participant sees it, and it dismisses itself once the connection recovers.

Improvements and fixes

• Participants who open a room they don't have access to now see a clear message with a "Back to assignment" button.
• "Start Quiz" in a demo experience now opens the pre-quiz.
• Completed sessions with no audio or transcript are now graded automatically, with zero scores across rubric criteria, instead of staying "Queued for Grading".
• Dead-air prompts during a session no longer repeat for the same issue, and now suggest what to check, such as the microphone, playback, or connection.

Accessibility

• Captions for Dynamic Intro videos now display in instructor preview and live sessions, for both group and solo variants.

Highlights

• Clearer session results status — Participants now see a live status for their session results: not started, in progress, processing, or ready. Results and metrics appear automatically as soon as processing finishes, with no need to refresh.
• "Dialog" experience type renamed to "Custom" — The experience type formerly called Dialog is now called Custom. Behaviour and existing content are unchanged.

Grading

• Completion lateness is now measured from when a session finishes rather than when it starts, so Breakout matches the submission timestamp in your LMS and respects individual deadline extensions.
• Changes to your default score mappings now apply to new assignments only, not to assignments that already exist.
• Teaching assistants can now update grading configuration, score mappings, rubric weights, and completion settings on an instructor's behalf. Saving those as section defaults remains limited to the instructor.
• Improved grading reliability across assignment configurations and LMS-connected workflows.

Improvements and fixes

• Scheduling reminder emails are now sent only for assignments where participants can set or change their meeting time.
• Improved the reliability of live transcription, including recovery if the speech service is interrupted during a session.

Highlights

• Camera-on time as a completion metric — Instructors can now grade the Completion criterion on camera-on time instead of time in session. Camera-on share is calculated against the full session length, so brief appearances don't earn full credit. A camera icon and tooltip in the gradebook and participant views explain the calculation, and changing the setting on a finished assignment re-grades and re-syncs to the connected LMS automatically.
• Exhibit previews inside the slide — Exhibits attached to the current slide now appear as draggable thumbnail previews, up to three at a time, so participants don't have to leave the discussion to look at them. The panel collapses to a counter and hides itself on slides without exhibits and during screen sharing.
• Chat and speech together in transcripts — In-session chat messages now appear in chronological order alongside spoken dialogue in the instructor transcript view, marked with a "Chat" label.
• Streamlined individual assignments — Assignments designed for one participant no longer show group and scheduling steps. The participant journey now runs straight from pre-work to session entry.
• Instructions on course materials — Instructional designers can add their own instruction text to course materials, such as "Complete both before the session," shown to participants on the pre-work screen.
• Assignment upgrades on a new experience version — Publishing a new version of an experience now detects assignments that haven't started yet and offers to upgrade the ones you choose, keeping their dates and configuration.
• Email reminders for LMS-connected sections — Participants in LMS-connected sections receive standard assignment reminder and update emails.
• Suggested timers removed from quiz slides — Solo and group quiz slides no longer show a suggested timer, to avoid unnecessary time pressure on self-paced questions. Timers remain available on poll slides.

• Improved the accuracy of camera-on time calculations.
• Individual assignment pages no longer show chat and scheduling panels, and show the right scheduling status.

Highlights

• Group composition in exports — The gradebook and participants CSV exports now include scheduled and completed group member counts, so you can see group composition and participation at a glance.
• Clearer transaction history for section passes — The participant transactions tab now itemises each purchase and distinguishes a section pass from individual assignment purchases.
• Scheduling reminder email — Participants who haven't scheduled their session yet now receive a reminder five days before the due date.
• Free access period visibility — Assignment pages show a colour-coded badge with the number of days remaining in a class's free access period, for both instructors and participants. The badge disappears once the period ends.
• Brightspace (D2L) new content experience — Added support for the updated D2L content experience, improving compatibility with its editing workflow.

Improvements and fixes

• Added a full-screen view for rubric rows in the evaluation dialog, including a clear message when there are no supporting arguments to show.

Highlights

• Screen sharing on the session results slide — Instructors and teaching assistants can now share their screen on the session results slide, making it possible to walk a class through results live. Participants can't share on this slide, and the end-of-session slide stays locked for everyone.
• Active participation before advancing — In individual sessions with the AI participant enabled, the next-slide button becomes available once the participant has spoken or sent a chat message on the current slide.
• Support chat in the platform — A support chat is now available in the bottom-right corner throughout Breakout for instructors and participants, outside the session room and the pre-session quiz.
• LMS shown on class lists — Class lists and breadcrumbs now show a small Canvas or D2L logo, so instructors can see at a glance which classes are LMS-synced.

Accessibility

• Addressed accessibility audit findings, improving media playback controls, focus management, and keyboard navigation in chat.

Highlights

• Individual deadlines — Instructors can set a custom deadline for an individual participant from the edit assignment dates dialog, and the change syncs to the connected LMS.
• Finish the end-of-session quiz after leaving early — Participants who leave a session before the end now have up to 30 minutes to complete the end-of-session quiz, from a new action on the assignment overview and details pages.
• Rejoin the group when results are shown — Participants are now separated only during the quiz or peer review, then automatically rejoin with full audio, video, and chat once results are displayed.
• Free access window for a section — Sections where participants pay can now offer a configurable free access period, letting participants start coursework before payment is required.
• Peer review reminder email — Participants with an outstanding peer review now receive a reminder 24 hours after the session, provided the deadline hasn't passed.
• Starter catalog for new instructors — New instructor accounts now start with the Breakout Originals catalog instead of an empty one.

• Customizable grading controls — Instructors can configure custom score mappings and rubric weights, including when creating or editing assignments in Canvas and Brightspace (D2L), and can save their preferences to reuse on future assignments.
• LTI 1.3 Advantage certification — Our LTI integration now supports generic LTI 1.3, in addition to Canvas and D2L, and has been certified by 1EdTech.
• Separate permissions for joining and leaving groups — Instructors now control independently whether participants may join a group and whether they may leave one.

Highlights

• Sort participants by first or last name — Instructors can choose how participant names are sorted and displayed, from a menu on the participant name column. The choice applies across the gradebook, results, and section views.
• YouTube videos on video slides — Video slides now accept a YouTube URL as a third video source, with duration detected automatically and support for a start time.
• Ready-made slide variants — Two preset slides are now available: a pre-filled waiting room slide and an agenda slide.
• Formatted slide deck descriptions — Slide deck previews now render the description with its formatting, so headings, links, and lists display properly.

Accessibility

• The class invitation sign-in page now uses list structure that screen readers can navigate.
• Keyboard users can now reach every chat on the Insights tab.

Improvements and fixes

• Improved the consistency of automated grading and the accuracy of talk-time figures in CSV exports.
• Clarified the tooltip for "show final score to participants": hiding scores in Breakout does not stop grades passing back to the Canvas or D2L gradebook.

Highlights

• Faster live captions — Live captions now appear while someone is still speaking, rather than after they finish, so transcription feels much closer to real-time closed captioning.

• Improved contrast on the conversation map chart: each bubble now has a darker border in its own colour.
• Improved keyboard and screen reader handling of pre-work PDF scrolling, the next-slide button, and scrolling on the grading criteria page.

• Chat messages sent during a session now count toward attendance, and participants can send chat messages to the AI participant.

Highlights

• Pre-quiz before the A/V check — Participants who open a session link before completing a required pre-quiz are now asked to take it first, with a button that takes them straight to it. Instructors, teaching assistants, and admins aren't affected.
• Randomized answer order — Multiple-choice answer choices now appear in a random order for each participant in pre-quizzes, in-session quizzes, and end-of-session quizzes. Polls and sorting questions keep their authored order, and results and analytics still show answers in authored order, so grading isn't affected.

Accessibility

• Completed our planned accessibility audit remediation, improving WCAG conformance across the platform.

Improvements and fixes

• The codeless-access opt-out list now also applies to participants who haven't joined yet, and the codeless-access setting now shows its help text.
• Chat messages from the session room are now included in the transcript.
• Users with read-only access now see a read-only Insights page.
• Fixed a display issue when speaking while sharing your screen in the session room.

Highlights

• Minimum and maximum group sizes — Assignment settings now use a range slider to set both a minimum and a maximum group size. Participants in a group below the minimum see a message and can join the session once the group is large enough, and instructors see a "Below Minimum Size" alert on those groups, including groups formed by auto-assignment.
• Discuss poll results — Interactive Poll slides can now show results during the discussion, on their own or alongside discussion text. Authors can also edit poll questions and answers directly, and enable task progress and the Solo Bot on poll slides.

• Blurred background — Participants can now blur their background during Breakout sessions, from the options shown when joining a room.

• Find users by email — When adding a user from the catalog, you can now search by email address.
• Ended sections in the LMS — Opening Breakout from an LMS section that has passed its end date now shows a "Section ended" message instead of the catalog, and no new Breakout section is created. Existing assignments and past results stay available.
• Full navigation in role-based previews — Instructors can now move through every slide when previewing an experience that uses roles.

Highlights

• Get ready before an assignment opens — Participants can now open a future-dated assignment to schedule a room, set their group name and time, and join or leave a group before it opens. Course materials and the pre-quiz stay locked until the assignment opens.
• Longer section date ranges — Section end dates can now be set more than six months after the start date. The existing reminder for sections shorter than two months still applies.

Improvements and fixes

• Experiences now always play the correct intro video.

Highlights

• Microphone check before joining — Participants can join a session once their microphone has picked up audio. A banner prompts them to speak first, so every participant is heard and included in the transcript.
• Force-complete a room — When participants leave before the end-of-session slide, instructors can grade the room with "Force Complete" in the group management dialog. The option appears once a room has been inactive for 60 minutes and asks for confirmation.
• Groups and schedules kept on assignment upgrades — Upgrading an assignment to a newer version of its experience keeps group membership and scheduled session times, as long as no session has started.
• Faster session scheduling — When scheduling a session, the date picker now pre-fills the next available time.
• More context in AI Insights — Improved AI Insights to give instructors more useful context on student participation and learning activity, with a new shortcut from the Student Details view.

• Create groups from an LMS export — Instructors can upload a Canvas or D2L group CSV export to a Breakout assignment to create groups and assign participants automatically, with no manual setup.
• Slide types in the Slide Editor — The slides list now shows each slide's type alongside its name and duration, and the slide type menu is grouped into categories (Intro & Setup, Content, Interactive Activities, Polls & Quizzes, Wrap-Up & Reflection).
• Live preview on published decks — Editors can choose "Save and Live Slide Preview" in the Edit Slide dialog to see exactly how a slide will look in a live session.
• Move between slides while editing — The Edit Slide dialog now has previous and next buttons, and its heading shows the slide's position, for example "Slide Details (3 of 10)".
• Insights is out of beta — The Insights tab no longer carries a Beta label.

• Each room now reliably has a single group leader.
